Fishing Guide
Fishing is a life skill which allows players to obtain various kinds of rewards, such as fish for cooking, collectibles, recipes, housing items, crafting ingredients, and even (extremely rarely) high-level equipment.
This feature is unlocked after reaching Cloudrise and following the introductory quest to meet Dong Ruicong, who gives you your first fishing rod and tasks you with fishing up a Speckled Perch.
How to Fish
Step 1 - Buy Bait
Fishing will always require you to consume a piece of bait. Which bait to use depends on where you're fishing. In general, have as many Delicious Dried Prawns on hand as possible when fishing in open world, but stock up on 50~75 Earth Dragons before going to Dragon Turtle Island for the weekend Reward Events.
Earth Dragons
Common bait. Used to obtain basic fish from fishing holes.
Delicious Dried Prawns
Special bait which not only picks up the basic fish from fishing holes, but will also fish up a bonus item from the prawns list. Bonus items include Golden Guzzlers (fish which can be sold in exchange for prestige and fishing currency) as well as many other rewards listed at the top of the page.
Five-Fold Bait
Special bait. Will supplement information after I've looked into this more.
Step 2 - Look for a Fishing Hole
While traversing open world you may come across several fishing holes. When you mouse over one of the fishing holes, a window will appear which informs of you of the basic local fish obtainable from the fishing hole, as well as the extra rewards for using dried prawn bait.
Blue fishing holes are personal and client-side, meaning you are the only one who can fish up the items. Blue fishing holes respawn biweekly.
Golden fishing holes are public, and extremely rare. They provide purple-quality fish. The rumored respawn time is approximately an hour, but may respawn at one of several water sources on the map.
Step 3 - Aim and Fish
After finding a fishing hole, approach it and follow these steps.
- Stand about ~5 meters away from the fishing hole.
- Equip your fishing rod by right-clicking from your inventory.
- Equip your bait by selecting your choice of bait from the quickbar which replaces your skills.
- Cast your rod using the first skill on the quickbar (hook icon).
- Look to see the golden light indicating where your lure is. A large fish will approach your lure. If your lure is NOT within the ripples of the fishing hole, interrupt your cast and reposition until you successfully overlap your lure with the fishing hole. (Bait will not be consumed if you interrupt your cast).
- When the fishing cast completes, get ready for a quick-time event. A fishing hook will rotate around a circle like a clock hand. Press the same button you used to cast your rod in order to stop the hook. Aim to stop the hook when it lands in the golden area.
- If you successfully complete the QTE, you will obtain a fish.
- You can interrupt the after-cast.
- Failing to press a button during the QTE or failing to land the hook in the golden area will result in bait being consumed and a trash item being added to your inventory.
Gold of the Four Seas Reward Event
Every weekend from 6pm-8pm EST, the Reward Event on Dragon Turtle Island will commence. Make sure to grab the blue quests in Cloudrise before entering Dragon Turtle Island.
When you pass through the portal, you will be prompted to choose a waypoint. Select any area as you can freely run/travel through the island if you do not like your chosen area. Once on the island, quickly equip your rod and bait. You can purchase more bait from the nearby vendor.
After entering Dragon Turtle Island you will have a time limit of 30 minutes to fish as many reward fish as you can. Reward fish include:
- Rainbow Carp: 80 points
- Koi: 40 points
- Cornet Fish: 30 points
- Silver Fish:
- Grey Grouper:
Competitive fishers can aim to land in the Dragonstar rankings, giving them additional rewards for being within the top 300(?) fishers. Non-competitive fishers, however, can aim to fish 100 points worth in order to complete the event. Players can leave the island before the 30 minutes are up, but cannot re-enter if they choose to leave early.
There are three kinds of fishing holes on Dragon Turtle Island.
Public Golden Fishing Holes (Gold)
Highly sought-after fishing spots which can be fished a maximum of 2 times before they disappear. They respawn every few minutes and are guaranteed to net you a Rainbow Carp or Koi, if you manage to land the QTE. The QTE for these fishing holes are noticeably more challenging.
Public Golden Fishing Holes (Blue)
While these fishing holes are blue, they are public and can only be used once. However, their respawn times are very fast. They are guaranteed to net you a reward fish of some kind.
Personal Fishing Holes (Blue)
Some areas of the island, particularly the docks, may have blue fishing holes which are personal fishing spots. These do not have reward fish for the event but can still contribute to the net weight limit needed to accomplish the event requirements.
The most important part of doing this event is to find a spot you can hunker down at and fish for your life. Any area with golden fishing holes will become extremely crowded, so be prepared to compete with others. I recommend trying to get better fishing poles in order to out-cast other players.
